Behavioral Questions

  • TMAAT you did something that reflected well on the company
  • TMAAT you did something in line with security protocol
  • TMAAT you dealt with an irate customer

Technical Questions

  • Jeppesen plates interpretation for real Horizon routes (e.g., PUW-LWS)
  • METAR/TAF reading and correlation to flight plan
  • MOCA, MORA interpretation

Company Questions

  • Why Horizon?
  • Must genuinely embrace the uniqueness of Horizon and Alaska

Tips

  • Alaska/Horizon provides positive-space travel and hotel accommodations
  • Country Inn & Suites near PDX is the typical hotel
  • Bring updated resume and 2 copies of all licenses/certificates
  • Technical interview uses real Horizon routes (Jeppesen plates for PUW, LWS)
  • Sim profile has no surprises - they explicitly want you to succeed
  • Chief Pilot interview includes logbook review - be honest, logs don't need to be perfect
  • They can tell if you genuinely want Horizon vs just any regional job
  • Horizon is head and shoulders above other regionals
  • Contingent offer includes drug test, background check, and sim eval
  • Memorize memory items and limitations before class date - this is Part 121
  • Box lunches are exceptionally good
  • 5 of 6 candidates typically receive offers

Interview Experience

Horizon does a full-day interview. Technical Jepp chart questions using actual Horizon routes, then a CP interview with logbook review, HR session, and a Frasca sim with a straightforward ILS. You can tell they want you to succeed. They cover your travel and hotel which is a nice touch.

Interview Stages

Interview in PortlandSim evaluation (may be waived for experienced 121 pilots)

Tips

  • If you do well enough during the interviews and have prior 121 time in the last 2 years, you may not have to do the sim portion
  • Interviews and ground school are conducted in Portland
  • Simulator training sessions are in Seattle
  • New hires can potentially get any base except ANC from day one during peak hiring
  • Alaska Airlines interviews QX FOs with 2000 hours SIC time at Horizon

Interview Experience

I had an interview coming up with Horizon Air and gathered information from current pilots. The interview process takes place in Portland, Oregon, while simulator sessions are conducted in Seattle. One helpful detail is that if you do well enough during the interviews and have prior 121 time in the last two years, you will not have to do the sim portion. During peak hiring periods, new hires have been able to get any base they want in the system including SEA and PDX from day one, with the exception of Anchorage. The company was losing an average of three FOs per week to other carriers, with about half going to Alaska Airlines. Alaska interviews Horizon FOs once they accumulate 2000 hours of SIC time at QX. The most recent classes had all gotten their first choice base assignments.
