What to Expect at Your UPS Interview

The UPS Airlines interview process typically consists of three stages: an HR behavioral round, a technical knowledge evaluation, and a simulator assessment. Candidates should be prepared to discuss their background in depth, demonstrate systems knowledge across the B747, B757, B767, A300, and MD-11 fleets, and show strong CRM skills in scenario-based questioning. Understanding UPS\'s cargo-focused operations and its distinct \'Brown\' culture will set top candidates apart.

UPS process is phone screen first, then the Hogan pops up 2-3 days later, then a Zoom interview that can take up to 3 months to get scheduled. Panel is 1 HR rep and 1 retired UPS Captain, goes about 60-90 minutes. HR covers TMAAT behavioral stuff, the retired Captain does technical: V1 cuts, chart briefings, STAR procedures, holding entries. They also like testing CRM/TEM concepts like Swiss Cheese model. Very relaxed atmosphere, no pressure. Apps carry over year to year so you don't need to reapply.

Sim Aircraft

Tips

  • Process flow: application submission -> app locked -> resume review (phone/Zoom) -> Hogan -> Zoom interview -> CJO
  • Total process took approximately 80 days from first email contact to CJO for one candidate
  • Interview to CJO was 35 days
  • Must reapply each year with a new application - old apps are archived and not visible to HR
  • Application status: Inactive = didn't meet computer cutoff mins, Active = met mins, Locked = flagged for human review
  • Getting 'inactive' status initially doesn't necessarily mean rejection - some went active later
  • Internal recommendations are important but submitted separately by UPS employees
  • Ensure your home address matches exactly between app and recommendations
  • Adam Hughes consulting recommended for interview prep
  • UPS was considering returning to in-person interviews and sim evaluations due to training costs
  • Pilots hired without internal recommendations reportedly required more extra training

Interview Experience

UPS hiring late 2021 was all virtual since sim rides were suspended. Process was online app, resume review over phone or Zoom, Hogan, then a Zoom interview. About 80 days from first contact to CJO. Your app status will bounce between inactive/active/locked so don't freak out. Internal recs from UPS pilots matter but they go through a separate internal system. Heard they were looking at going back to in-person interviews and sims because the Zoom-only hiring was driving up training costs.

Tips

  • Devote all your time to preparation with no other distractions
  • Study UPS extensively - the entire company, not just the airline
  • Avoid canned responses
  • Be prepared for follow-up questions that push beyond rehearsed answers
  • Stay at the recommended Holiday Inn
  • Prepare questions to ask them - you'll be asked multiple times what questions you have

Interview Experience

Showed up for UPS and it was just me and one other candidate, way smaller than I expected. Sim first, a 757 with raw data and unfamiliar gauges. Lasted 30-40 minutes. The retired sim instructors were super chill and handled all the configuration. After the sim they parked us in the break room, grabbed some coffee. Panel was next, 1.5-2 hours with retired guys and an HR person. Very relaxed, they just want to get to know you. But they will push past your prepared answers. Didn't get the nod this time, that's on me. Just know that everything from the moment you arrive is part of the eval.
