Technical Questions

  • Current aircraft limitations questions

Company Questions

  • Why Spirit? is the critical question
  • Gallup assessment as prerequisite

Tips

  • 75% personality, only 25% technical
  • Entire day is playing games with a quick 15-minute interview between games
  • Must be able to explain any question on AviationInterviews gouge
  • Read Jeppesen Intro to Navigation Charts
  • Fumbling Why Spirit or geographic rationale questions will cost you the offer
  • TMAT (Tell Me About A Time) format dominates
  • Group session where company reviews background and candidates introduce themselves
  • Professional attire recommended (suit)
  • Gallup personality assessment is completed before phone interview
  • 3000 flight hour minimum is flexible, not absolute
  • Note: Spirit filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy; hiring status uncertain

Interview Experience

Spirit interview day is mostly group activities and games with a quick 15-minute panel squeezed in between. It's about 75% personality, 25% technical. You start in a group session doing intros, then get called out one at a time for the panel. They ask 'Why Spirit?' in about five different ways so have a good answer ready. Technical side was an approach chart briefing and some limitations questions. Before you even get invited you'll do a Gallup personality assessment over the phone. Suit up, be professional. Note: Spirit filed Chapter 11 in late 2024.

Company Questions

  • Be ready for the 4000TT question - why you're competitive despite hour requirements

Tips

  • 4000 TT is officially a hard requirement but military candidates have been hired under it
  • No military sortie conversion (no .2 or .3 per sortie bump)
  • Job fair attendance is FAR AND AWAY the best option for non-standard candidates
  • Practice your 5-minute pitch on why you're a good fit
  • Be ready for the 4000TT question, nail the answer with confidence
  • 3000+ apps on file; new hire classes every month
  • 50 ME in 12 months also required
  • Phone interview comes after the long application
  • Wait times between application steps are not standardized
  • Hiring was increasing over recent levels as of this period

Interview Experience

Spirit has a hard 4000 TT minimum. Some military guys got in below that but don't count on it as a civilian. Go to a job fair if you can, that's the best way to get your name in front of them. When I was going through they had 3000+ apps on file and were running new classes monthly. They don't accept military hour conversions either.

  • Why Spirit?
  • What do you think Spirit can do better?
  • What if a legacy airline called you?
  • Who do you know here?
  • What do you know about the Spirit business model?

Tips

  • Have stories prepared for conflict, customer service, leadership, strengths and weaknesses
  • Be truthful, don't be canned
  • Show them you're in it for the long haul
  • They didn't touch logbooks
  • Bring letters of recommendation
  • Big brother is watching all the time - you are interviewing at all times, even when not talking to someone
  • Engage the people you are having lunch with
  • High pass rate - the company wants you, you compete only against yourself
  • Know names of senior leadership, especially flight ops
  • Don't bring up contract negotiations or be negative about anyone, including former employer
  • Know Spirit's financials: stock price, fleet plan, domiciles
  • If Mark O. gives the presentation, he basically gives you the answer to the business model question - rephrase it for the panel
  • Hotels near training center provide transportation to/from airport and training center

Interview Experience

Spirit interview day starts in a room with all the candidates for a company overview. Then they pull you out for a panel, usually 2 or 3 interviewers on 1. Mostly TMAAT questions. Felt like 20 minutes tops. Left having no idea if I bombed or nailed it but ended up getting the job. Most of the day is actually spent talking to the other candidates and having lunch with company folks. Be yourself, stay positive. Pass rate is high.
