What to Expect at Your SkyWest Interview

The SkyWest interview follows a panel format combining behavioral and technical questioning, with interviewers probing your aeronautical knowledge alongside your crew resource management judgment and situational awareness. Expect questions that assess both your stick-and-rudder fundamentals—METARs, TAFs, aircraft systems—and your ability to articulate real-world experiences using structured storytelling. Company-specific questions about SkyWest\'s culture, partners, and operations are common, making airline-specific prep essential.

Interview Experience

Did the SkyWest Skype interview in November. Three sections: HR/company knowledge, behavioral, and tech. For company knowledge they expect you to know SkyWest is the largest regional in the US, HQ'd in Utah, flying for United, American, Delta, and Alaska with almost 500 aircraft. TMAAT behavioral stuff on CRM, crew disagreements, emergencies, safety observations. Tech was deep: microbursts, thunderstorms, compressor stalls, start malfunctions, electrical and pneumatic systems, alternate requirements, lost comm procedures, airspace speeds, holds, RVSM, crew requirements. They even asked about the Navajo electrical system specifically. Approach charts, airport lighting, swept wing aero. Get aviationinterviews.com, seriously.

technical interview

Technical Questions

  • Describe the electrical system of the aircraft you fly most
  • How is AC converted to DC and vice versa
  • What are the pros and cons of AC versus DC electrical systems

Tips

  • The interview was very conversational in nature
  • Technical depth varies significantly by interviewer
  • Some interviewers may ask you to draw electrical schematics freehand

Interview Experience

SkyWest interview was very conversational, about 45 minutes. Tech portion was mostly electrical systems. They wanted me to describe the electrical system on whatever I'm most familiar with and explain AC vs DC conversion, advantages and disadvantages of each. Still waiting on results. Way less intimidating than I expected, felt like a conversation more than a grilling.

Tips

  • SkyWest CJO to class date took approximately 15 months (1 year 3 months)
  • Candidate applied broadly and had CJOs from both Republic and SkyWest simultaneously
  • SkyWest eventually came through with class dates while Republic rescinded

Interview Experience

Had CJOs from both Republic and SkyWest. Republic sat on mine for 18 months then rescinded it. SkyWest eventually came through with class dates after about 15 months. I ended up taking a corporate gig in the meantime. Have options. Don't put all your eggs in one basket in this hiring market.
