Behavioral Questions

  • Tell me about yourself
  • Describe your best and worst crew member experiences
  • How have you used CRM to resolve crew issues?
  • Tell me about a decision you regret
  • Conflict resolution examples
  • Volunteer experience

Company Questions

  • Why Hawaiian Airlines and not another major carrier?
  • Willingness to relocate to Hawaii

Tips

  • Three separate interview sessions, no sim eval, no technical questions
  • CRM exercise pairs you with another applicant; one acts as CA, other as FO
  • Pilot panel: 3 pilots from different equipment types ask TMAAT questions about flight experiences
  • Management panel: 1 Hawaiian rep + 1 Alaska Airlines rep focus on personal background and cultural fit
  • Two groups of 4 candidates per day
  • Being humble is critical; arrogance detected in first 10 minutes
  • Felt more like a dialogue than an interview
  • Panelists wore Hawaiian shirts; candidates typically wore suits
  • Arrive early; parking and building entrance can be challenging
  • Holly Hoover with Cage Marshall recommended for Hawaiian-specific prep (~$400)
  • Willingness to relocate to Hawaii viewed favorably

Interview Experience

Hawaiian interview is 3 parts, all in HNL. First is a CRM exercise where they pair you with another candidate as CA and FO. Ours was holding into HNL with fuel and wx to think through. Second is a pilot panel with 3 pilots from different fleets asking TMAAT behavioral stuff about actual flight experiences. Third is a management panel with a Hawaiian rep and an Alaska rep covering personal background and culture fit. No sim, no tech questions, no written test. Very conversational. Be humble, be genuine, don't try to be someone you're not.

Tips

  • Application to interview invite was approximately 2 days (pre-merger)
  • Timeline has slowed significantly post Alaska Airlines merger announcement
  • Regional airline experience (especially SkyWest) is the preferred pathway - guys with less than a year at a regional are getting hired
  • 135/Fractional pilots can get hired but will need more hours and work harder than 121 candidates
  • Housing is NOT provided during training in Honolulu - hotel is provided only for sim training done outside HNL
  • All aircraft types have been available to new hires - B717 trending junior, A330F positions going to new hires
  • 717 Captain upgrade was as fast as 5 months on property
  • Classes were full through October with 15 pilots per class (3 A330, 5 A321, 5 B717 split reported)

Interview Experience

Got hired at Hawaiian with about 1700-1750TT and only 175 hours of 121 SIC time. Applied and had an interview invite within 2 days, which was wild. Whole pipeline from app to class date was about 6 months. Felt way underqualified compared to my classmates but it worked out.

Behavioral Questions

  • Tell me about a time when you faced a challenge
  • Standard HR behavioral questions

Company Questions

  • Why do you want to work for Hawaiian Airlines

Tips

  • Focus on CRM and decision-making skills during group scenarios
  • Be prepared to work collaboratively with other candidates
  • Demonstrate thought process and non-normal situation management
  • Show how you involve teammates in problem-solving
  • No need to study specific aircraft procedures as there is no sim evaluation

Interview Experience

Hawaiian dropped the sim from their interview. Now it's three separate interview sessions, mostly behavioral. Expect TMAAT questions and why-Hawaiian stuff. The technical part is a group CRM exercise where they pair you with another candidate and throw minor ops problems at you like wx delays, pax issues, or system malfunctions. They're watching how you think through it and work with your partner. It's not about getting the right answer, it's about your process and how you handle working with someone else.
