Detailed interview experiences from pilots who interviewed at FedEx Express.

2014✓ HiredTwo-day process (separate trips)
Memphis, TN (MEM)·2 days, separated by 2-3 weeks·Two retired Captains for face-to-face interview

Interview Stages

Day 1: Three-part testing - Psych evaluation, Aeronautical knowledge test, Cognitive skills testDay 2 (if pass Day 1): SBI (Situation-Based Interview), Panel interview with two retired Captains

Written Test

Aeronautical knowledge test described as 'really really hard'. Best prep: 'Everything for Professional Pilot' and 'Aero for Naval Aviators' books. Delta Test gouge is decent supplemental prep. FAA Pilot Handbook also very helpful. Three tests total on day 1: psych eval, cognitive, and aeronautical knowledge.

Sim Aircraft

DC-10 sim (historically), A300/Bus sim also used

Technical Questions

  • Aeronautical knowledge test covering broad aviation topics
  • Questions similar to Delta knowledge test format

Tips

  • Emerald Coast Consulting is unanimously recommended for interview prep - 'money well spent'
  • Prep cognitive skills daily with Lumosity app
  • Be consistent on personality test - don't mention voices you hear (humor from poster)
  • Two separate trips to Memphis required at candidate's expense
  • Study 'Everything for Professional Pilot' and 'Aero for Naval Aviators' cover to cover
  • Delta Aviation Knowledge Exam gouge is useful supplemental prep
  • Sim prep through Emerald Coast contacts in Memphis was valuable (when sim was still part of process)
  • Non-military and non-sim-prep candidates have been hired but it's harder
  • All new hires placed into B757 FO crew position
  • Pilot Credentials website is used for applications

Interview Experience

FedEx is two trips to Memphis on your own dime. First trip is three tests: psych eval, cognitive, and aero knowledge. Pass those and they bring you back a few weeks later for the SBI and a panel with two retired captains. They dropped the sim around 2014. Do Emerald Coast for prep. Everyone says it and everyone is right.

2023✓ Hiredin-person
Memphis, TN (FedEx HQ)·2 days (Day 1 at home/remote, Day 2 in person)·Multiple panels including retired FedEx pilots

Interview Stages

Day 1: Remote/at-home preparation (changed from in-person)Day 2: SBI (Scenario-Based Interview) / CRM exerciseDay 2: Panel interviewNDA signed at interview

Tips

  • Emerald Coast Interview Consulting (ECIC) is the most recommended prep service for FedEx
  • Ready Set Takeoff (RST) also recommended as complementary prep
  • Do both ECIC and RST for full coverage
  • Know everything about FedEx before walking in
  • SBI is the critical component - most failures occur here
  • Interview group hire rates vary: one group reported 5/12 hired
  • SBI grader assignment may significantly impact outcomes
  • NDA is signed - do not release SBI scenario specifics

Interview Experience

FedEx is a two-day deal. The SBI CRM exercise is the big one and you sign an NDA so I can't get into specifics. Panel interview is the other piece. Seriously, go to Emerald Coast. Everyone recommends them for a reason. It's worth the money.

Behavioral Questions

  • typical what if scenario questions

Tips

  • Resume needs to show experience as simulator instructor, LCA/PCA, or military instructor
  • Previous aircraft and instructor experience determines which position is offered
  • Bachelor's degree preferred but credit given for degree equivalency based on instructor experience

Interview Experience

The FedEx professional instructor gig is all about teaching, not flying. You prep a lesson on something like a V1 cut and teach it to two PI managers who evaluate your instructional skills. Standard behavioral and WWYD questions too. No written test, no sim. They want to see real instructional experience, whether that's sim instructor, LCA, PCA, or military IP. It's about how well you can break down a concept and get it across.
