Interview Stages
Written Test
ATP written-style knowledge. This candidate first got a call from CommuteAir at 1,500 hours and planned to study for the timed pre-interview written with ATP prep software such as Sheppard or Dauntless. Another poster said the Airline Interview gouge site matched the pretest closely.
Behavioral Questions
- What are your best and worst attributes?
- Tell me about a time when... questions
Technical Questions
- Brief an approach plate. They remembered it as probably an ILS into Newark (EWR).
- Brief a SID. It may have been a departure out of Washington Dulles (IAD).
- Copy and read back a clearance
Company Questions
- Why CommuteAir?
Tips
- The questions and their order matched an earlier candidate's gouge exactly, so reviewing existing gouge is worthwhile.
- The approach plate and SID were ordinary. Be comfortable briefing a standard ILS and departure procedure.
- The interview was short enough to do between flights at their current job.
- Know the limitations and memory items from the pre-class study guide word for word before training. There is a limitations/QRC quiz on the first day of systems and the same quiz again near the end.
- Form a study group on the first day of class.
- Get the current QRC revision, which includes an EFB fire checklist.
Interview Experience
This candidate had just reached 1,500 hours when CommuteAir called. They were leaning toward the company and took a timed written test before the interview, using ATP written prep software to study. They did the Skype interview between flights at their job at the time, in roughly early January 2019.
The interview followed an earlier candidate's gouge exactly, including the order. It opened with why CommuteAir and moved to their best and worst attributes and a few 'tell me about a time when' questions. The technical part was an approach plate briefing, a SID briefing, and a clearance copy and readback. They recalled the approach as an ILS into Newark and thought the SID might have been out of Dulles. They said neither was unusual.
They got a job offer, accepted it, and were given a March 4 class date, which was their first Part 121 training. Pilots already at CommuteAir told them to arrive with the limitations and memory items memorized word for word. On the first day of systems, trainees take a quiz on the study-guide material. It isn't pass/fail, but it sets a baseline, and the same quiz is given again near the end of systems so the training manager can see whether a trainee studied and improved. Other advice was to study the QRC ahead of time, make sure the study guide has the latest QRC revision with the EFB fire checklist, form a study group right away, and stay alert in the Systems Integration class. The instructors were described as great.
